What to Look for in a Playset

An all-around good investment

Your kids want fun, while you’re more concerned with safety. Thankfully, those two don’t have to be mutually exclusive. With a little know-how, you can pick a high quality playset that will give the whole family years of relaxation and amusement. Here are a few tips to help ensure you’re getting a good value all around.

Plastic playsets don’t hold up to the elements, and metal can be dangerously hot in the sun. Wood is universally considered to be the most durable choice—but not all wood is created equal. Redwood is a popular choice, although cedar and cypress offer the same long-lasting, insect-repelling qualities.

Regardless of which tree it came from, you’ll want the wood of your playset to be certified for quality and safety by the American Society for Testing and Materials. Avoid wood that has been chemically treated, as this can be harmful to kids. All Rainbow Play Systems are built with certified, sustainable North American timber. The Sunshine, Rainbow, Monster, and King Kong swing sets are constructed exclusively of either 100% Redwood or North American timber. All wood is responsibly harvested using eco-friendly practices.

Even a solid wood playground still has room for error. Before purchasing a set, investigate the hardware and construction to ensure that it’s safe for daily play. Bigger wooden beams better resist warping and cracking, so go for the heavy-duty build; recessed triple joints mean you won’t have to worry about the playset literally coming apart at the seams. Guardrails on platforms and safe ladders with flat rungs (as opposed to round ones) are also must-haves, particularly for younger children. Rainbow swing sets feature top-quality craftsmanship, meeting or exceeding the highest industry standards.

Despite your best efforts, something could break or deteriorate on your playset. This is where the warranty becomes vital. It should cover the structural integrity and last for at least a year; the wood beams themselves should be covered for life. Although you may never need to use it, a warranty lets you enjoy the new playset with peace of mind. After all, kids and nature are guaranteed to be unpredictable. Rainbow Play Systems are protected by an exclusive lifetime warranty.

A more fun childhood

A quality playset is an investment in your child’s future—you’re providing a fun, safe outlet for their imagination, energy, and enthusiasm. By doing your research beforehand, you’ll be able to watch your kids at play, with the assurance that you’ve given them the best. A well-crafted wooden playset will be a source of many childhood memories for them, and many proud moments for you.
